IVC Filter Perforation

In the body, a perforation is a small hole in the tissue. Some perforations, like piercings in the ears and other cartilage, are created intentionally for a cosmetic effect. Others, generally those that are created inside the body, are not created intentionally. One such type of internal perforation is the type created by an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter.

When an IVC filter creates a perforation in an individual’s heart, lung, or another part of the body, he or she can face serious health consequences. If you do suffer from an IVC filter perforation or any other type of injury caused by an IVC filter, contact an experienced defective medical device attorney to discuss the possibility of recovering compensation for your losses through an IVC filter perforation claim.

Suffering from an IVC Filter Perforation

IVC perforations are one of the most common types of injury caused by IVC filters. In fact, some studies suggest that up to one quarter of people who have had IVC filters inserted have suffered from perforations in their inferior vena cavas, the part of the heart where this type of filter is inserted. Although this type of injury is relatively common, it is not something to be ignored. Sometimes, the complications that stem from an IVC filter perforation are fairly minor and in other cases, they are dangerous and can be life-threatening. Talk to your doctor about these risks before having one inserted and if you experience chest pain, nausea, or other symptoms associated with IVC filter complications afterward, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

In 2010, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a safety warning for patients with IVC filters that said that the patients with the greatest risk of suffering for perforations are those whose devices are not removed within a reasonable time frame. An IVC filter is not supposed to be left in a patient’s body permanently.

IVC Filter Perforation Complications

An IVC filter perforation can injure a variety of body parts. These body parts include the following:

  • The ureter, the duct through which urine passes from the kidneys to the bladder;
  • The aorta, the heart’s main exit artery that supplies the rest of the body with oxygenated blood;
  • The duodenum, the part of the small intestine closest to the stomach; and
  • The retroperitoneal lining, the area within the abdomen just behind the peritoneum. This membrane lines the abdominal cavity and protects its organs.

These injuries are not always immediately apparent. Be aware of the symptoms of an IVC filter perforation and seek medical care as soon as possible if you experience any of them.
